Dog Safety Education!
70 million nice dogs…but any dog can bite.
Every year, almost 5 million people are bitten by dogs. Most of the people bitten are children. Most dog bites affecting young children occur during everyday activities and while interacting with familiar dogs. Senior citizens are the second most common dog bite victims. Preventing dog bites is everyone's responsibility, and simple measures can be very effective. Join us during the National Dog Bite Prevention Months and help us educate people of all ages on dog bite prevention!
The "Be a Tree" Program

The Be a TreeTM Program is a fun and interactive presentation for children that teaches them how to read dog body language and be safe around dogs. The program is administered by Doggone Safe, a non-profit organization dedicated to dog bite prevention through education, and dog bite victim support. The program is supported by a Teacher Kit produced by Doggone Crazy! that contains photos and games to teach kids how to "Be a Tree" and act safely around dogs. The main message from the presentation is "Be a Tree" if strange dog comes near or any dog is too frisky or is making you uncomfortable.
The Be a Tree program is available across North America and around the world. Approximately 500,000 children have benefited from the lessons learned in this program.
The Be a Tree program is the only dog bite prevention program to have received the support of major professional organizations such as The Ontario Veterinary Medical Association, the Canadian Association of Animal Health Technologists and Technicians, the Saskatchewan Association of Veterinary Technologists, the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association and the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians all support the Be a Tree program.

The program is broken down into two main parts:
Part 1: Teaching Segment (15 - 20 min)
The presenter uses large format photos to teach the children about how to read dog body language and how to act safely around dogs. They learn how to use the tools they have in their head to keep themselves safe. During the session they get to practice how to "be a tree" several times.
Part 2: Practicing Segment (15 - 20 min)
This is the really fun part! The class engages in interactive games and role playing to practice what they have learned.
